Tips & Training
New to trail running? You’re in the right place!
Trail Half Marathon Wales is designed to be accessible for runners of all abilities, including those stepping off the road for the first time. These simple tips will help you feel confident, prepared and ready to enjoy your race.
Our top tips for beginners
1
Slow down - that's normal
Trail running is different to road running. Hills, uneven ground and terrain changes mean your pace will naturally be slower. That’s expected — focus on effort, not pace.
2
Walk the hills
Even experienced runners walk steep climbs.
Mixing running and walking is part of trail running and helps you conserve energy for the whole course.
3
Keep your eyes on the trails
Trail running requires a bit more focus than road running.
Watch where you place your feet, especially on uneven or muddy sections.
4
Vary your stride length
On trails, shorter steps help you stay balanced and in control. This is especially useful on descents and technical sections.
5
Use the downhills
Downhill sections are your chance to recover and make up time. Stay relaxed, keep your steps light and let gravity do some of the work.
6
Practice the terrain
If you can, try running on a variety of surfaces before race day. Parks, trails, grass or woodland paths help you get used to the uneven nature of trails and will give you confidence.
7
Dont forget to fuel and hydrate
Even for a half marathon, it’s important to stay fuelled.
Bring some water and consider a gel or snack, especially if you’re new to longer runs.

Trail running isn’t just about time — it’s about the experience. Take in the scenery, enjoy the atmosphere and embrace doing something different!
